× 100 and × 1000 are played as two and three separate hops of × 10, so a class sees that multiplying by 1000 is multiplying by 10 three times over.

Trailing zeroes writes the zeroes that are always there after the last digit — 45 as 45.0000 — in faint grey. Multiply, and one of them crosses the point into the ones column and turns blue. That is where the zero in 450 comes from.

The matching division writes × 10 as ÷ 0.1 underneath — a stretch for a class that is ready for it.
