Roll the die and write the digit in one of your place value squares to build the biggest number you can. Roll one you don’t want? Pass it to somebody else and make them take it — that’s why it’s called the Nasty Game.

How to play

Everyone has a board of empty place value squares — thousands, hundreds, tens and ones to start with.
On your turn, roll the die. Then choose: keep it — write it in one empty square on your own board — or pass it to another player.
If you are passed a digit, you have to take it: you choose which empty square on your board it goes in. Then play carries on from the player who passed it.
That is the nasty part. Roll a 1? Pass it to the leader and make them find room for it. Roll a 9? Keep it for yourself. But everyone else can do the same to you.
You can pass on any roll, even your first. If your own board is full, you can only pass.
When every square on every board is full, the round ends and each board’s number is that player’s score. Digits you were passed are shown in red.
After the last round the scores are added up. Depending on the settings the largest total wins, the smallest, or the one closest to the average of everyone’s totals.
Online, the class is split into tables of 2 to 4 that each play the game, and the leaderboard ranks the whole room. If someone stops playing, anyone at their table can let the computer take their turn (or take a digit they were passed).
